Book Review: THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS by M.R. Carey

GirlThe Girl with all the Gifts by M.R. Carey

Book Description:

The Girl With All the Gifts is a groundbreaking thriller, emotionally charged and gripping from beginning to end.

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class.

When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh.

Melanie is a very special girl.

I included the book description because when I first saw the cover, I assumed it wasn’t my kind of book. I don’t know what I thought it was, but a girl with her arms stretched out didn’t tell me enough to excite me. And then the reviews started popping up on Goodreads, all five stars and gushing over how exciting, surprising and fresh the story was. After finishing it I have to agree with the rave reviews and I’m glad the cover didn’t spoil anything. This book punched hard and in all the right places to earn knockout status. In hindsight, I wish I knew even less so that I could have been more surprised. Come into this book having no idea what this girl with all the gifts is about and let it pummel you in its terror and sentimentality. Best read of the year.

In an effort to preserve your unbiased entry into this story, I’ll wrap my review up here and point you to my Goodreads review where I have hidden my spoilerish discussion.

We have plans to get M.R. Carey on the podcast, and while I’ll ask him about his writing journey, I may devote half of it to spoiler discusssion. So, go out and get this now, read it, and look forward to our chat with M.R. Carey.
