Timothy C. Ward, author of Scavenger (free today thru Wednesday), interviewed M.R. Carey about his breakout novel, The Girl with all the Gifts. In Tim’s review a few weeks ago, he called it one of the best reads of the year. This interview has a small spoiler section in the last few minutes, but otherwise you need not fear listening to this podcast if you haven’t read it. Of course, there is also a small benefit to taking the plunge into the story with no prior knowledge of the setting. Regardless, it is an honor to have M.R. Carey on the show to talk about his early career writing comics and how he became a novelist, as well as how he made The Girl with all the Gifts stand out in a popular genre.
About M.R. Carey:
Mike Carey is the acclaimed writer of Lucifer and Hellblazer (now filmed as Constantine). He has recently completed a comics adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere, and is the current writer on Marvel’s X-Men and Ultimate Fantastic Four. He has also written the screenplay for a movie, Frost Flowers, which is soon to be produced by Hadaly Films and Bluestar Pictures.
About The Girl with all the Gifts by M.R. Carey (Orbit, 2014):
NOT EVERY GIFT IS A BLESSING
Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class.
When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite. But they don’t laugh.
Melanie is a very special girl.
Emotionally charged and gripping from beginning to end, THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS is the most powerful and affecting thriller you will read this year.
